Diesel, petrol, LPG or hybrid: which engine to choose in 2026
Everyone asks this before buying a car — and most answer wrong, because they only look at fuel consumption. In reality, what really pays off is decided by the total cost of ownership and one simple question: how much and where do you drive. A diesel that’s brilliant on the motorway can be the worst choice in the city. Below we break the four drivetrains into their parts, show the break-even points in numbers, and give a simple decision rule.
The overriding rule: how much and where you drive
Europe’s biggest cost comparison (ADAC 2026, ~270 model pairs) ends with one conclusion: there’s no rule that a given drivetrain is always cheaper. The outcome is decided by the model, annual mileage, purchase, servicing, tyre and depreciation costs — not fuel consumption alone. So before you pick a drivetrain, answer: how many km a year, and what share is city vs motorway.
Four drivetrains — pros, cons, who they suit
Diesel — king of long journeys. Uses 20–30% less than petrol, has high torque and huge longevity (300,000–500,000 km). But: pricier servicing (injection, DPF, EGR, AdBlue), sensitivity to city driving (DPF clogging on short trips), and low-emission-zone restrictions. Suits: 18,000–25,000 km+, lots of motorway, heavier cars (Passat, Superb, SUV, estate).
Petrol — the safe middle. Cheaper car, simple and cheap servicing, no DPF issues, stable in any conditions. Cons: higher consumption than diesel, less economical in the urban cycle at high mileage. Suits: moderate mileage (up to ~15,000–20,000 km), city driving, those who value simplicity and cheap servicing.
LPG — the cheapest fuel. Gas costs about half the price of petrol, with 10–15% higher consumption — real fuel savings of 40–50%. Cons: installation cost (pays back at sufficient mileage), smaller boot (tank), slightly rarer LPG servicing. Suits: high-mileage petrol drivers who want to slash the fuel bill.
Hybrid (HEV) — master of the city. In town it often runs on the electric motor and recovers braking energy — can use 30–40% less than petrol. Holds value very well (lower depreciation than diesel/petrol). Cons: pricier to buy, battery cost/condition on older examples. Suits: mostly city and mixed driving. Note: a plug-in (PHEV) only pays off if you charge regularly — without charging it runs “on fuel” and the advantage vanishes.

At up to 10,000–12,000 km a year, differences in fuel cost are smaller than differences in purchase price — then the car’s price, servicing access and convenience matter more than the drivetrain type.
Don’t forget depreciation and the whole TCO
A drivetrain isn’t just fuel. Hybrids usually hold value best, diesels can be sensitive to expensive ancillary failures, and an LPG conversion is viewed variably at resale.
