Buying a car in Poland without a residence card

A common myth: 'you can't buy a car without a residence card'. In fact you can buy (own) a car in Poland without one. The harder parts are registration and financing.

Buying: no card needed

Ownership doesn't depend on your residence status. To buy a car a passport and a sale contract (umowa) are enough. A foreigner (including with UKR status) can own a car in Poland.

Registration: what you'll need

• a PESEL — obtainable, including with UKR status;
• an address — a meldunek isn't required, your actual address (e.g. from a rental contract) is enough;
• the car documents, OC, fees and (for imports) excise.

Pitfalls

• some dealers ask for a PESEL or card for formalities — it's worth having a PESEL;
• a loan or lease is harder without a card and a Polish credit history;
