How long to wait for a licence exchange and consulate delays

You've filed for the exchange of your Ukrainian licence for a Polish one — and you're waiting. How long does it take and what to do if the consulate is slow to respond? Here are the timings and options.

How long it takes

Usually from 2 weeks to 3 months, sometimes longer. Filing itself is quick — the time is eaten by verifying the authenticity of your licence.

Why the delays

Before issuing the Polish document, the authority (via the Starostwo) sends a request to confirm the authenticity of your licence to the issuing body — effectively through the Ukrainian side / consulate. Until the reply arrives, the document isn't issued.

Important. File early — before the period your Ukrainian licence is still valid runs out (185 days). Otherwise you may end up unable to drive legally.

What to do if it drags on

• check the case status at the Starostwo / Wydział Komunikacji where you filed;
• keep copies and a scan of the licence before filing (the original is taken during the procedure);
• keep the medical certificate ready;
• if needed, contact the consulate about faster confirmation.
